Zionsville Little League Game Recaps for Recreational Tournament and Showcase Teams

Tournament Championships

Majors Baseball

The Ron Schulte State Farm Insurance Cardinals defeated the Subway Athletics 7-5 to win the Majors Championship. Cameron Gelwicks led the Cardinals attack with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Jordan Pugh had a key bases loaded single which brought in 3 runs and Tommmy Johnston had a key RBI single in the 6th inning. Tommy Johnston and Kevin O'Brien both pitched well for the Cardinals to secure the win. The Athletics were lead by Pierce Weingartner who had 3 hits and 2 RBIs, including a solo Homerun. The A's staged a late rally to make the game close, but fell just short leaving the tying run on base.

AAA Baseball

The Bearable Grins/Dr. Nicholson Marlins defeated the Bone Dry Roofing Blue Jays 12-8, capturing the Zionsville Little League AAA championship. The underdog Marlins were led by pitchers Wesley Rischar and Jacob Pressler. Winning pitcher, Rischar, helped his own cause with two hits and three RBI's. Pressler earned the save, drove in a run and made two spectacular defensive plays, including an unassisted double play to end the game. Seven Marlins drove in runs with Ethan Hartzel knocking in three. Infielders Jack Kelly and Chris Wilson combined to drive in three runs and score five. The Blue Jays were led by starting pitcher Clay Gietl who singled, doubled and scored three times. Kyle Callahan reached base four times for the Jays, including a long double in the first frame to push across the game's first run.

AA Baseball

In the AA championship game, the NewRiverz Tigers avenged two regular season losses to the top-seeded Sprinkler Works Mets to capture a hard fought game in seven innings, 10-5. Mike Prier, Morgen Roberts, and Jackson Williams combined on the mound for the Tigers, while Carson Gadd, Wes Burkle and Ethan Copner threw for the Mets. The game was scoreless for the first three innings as strong catching by Roberts (Tigers) and Cole Connor and Levi Glenn (Mets) combined with the pitching to keep runners stranded on base, until the Tigers broke through in the top of the 4th with Jack Farley crossing the plate with the first of two runs. The Mets tied the score with two in the bottom of the 4th, and after Evan Bacon drove in a run for the Tigers with a single to right in the top of the 5th, the Mets gained back that run in the bottom half of the inning to enter the 6th tied at 3. After the Tigers scored two on an Eric Paden blast in the top of the 6th, the Mets came back to tie the score and load the bases with two out in the bottom of the inning. A stellar defensive play by catcher Will Guckien, on a ball hit in front of the plate, sent the game to extra innings. The Tigers broke the game open in the top of the 7th with five runs, led by Prier’s triple to the right field corner and balls moved around by Roberts, Jacob Mears, Farley and Williams. The Mets got a base runner on in the bottom of the 7th, but the Tigers with Williams on the mound managed to hold off the charging Mets and claim the victory. Special recognition to the Tigers stellar third base coach Greyson Roberts. The Tigers consist of the following players: Evan Bacon, Peyton Daniel, Jack Farley, Will Guckien, Cameron Joray, Jacob Mears, Eric Paden, Mike Prier, Morgen Roberts, Alec Rheinheimer, Jake Stevens, Jackson Williams.

Rookie 8 Baseball

The Dick's Sporting Goods Orioles defeated the McDonalds Phillies 4-3. Matthew McKay started off with a double for the Orioles and Eli Bell followed with a line drive triple down the third baseline to score the first run of the game. The Phillies responded with a run in the bottom of the second when Graham Shelton singled and eventually scored. The Orioles were held scoreless in the second and third innings when the Phillies defense, led by Carson Chapman, Lincoln Horth, and Luke & Graham Shelton kept the team from reaching base.

The Orioles fought back in the top of the fourth when Sam Benedict smacked a double to score William Pitts and Eli Bell. The Phillies tied the game in the bottom of the fourth by scoring two more runs as Chapman led off the inning with a double and scored on Luke Shelton's single. Patrick Kirk and Sam Williams followed with singles to add the tying run. The Orioles, however, went ahead in the top of the fifth when Joe Wiltrout singled and scored the go ahead run off of Caleb Berrong's grounder to first. In the bottom of the sixth great defense from Eli Bell, Caleb Berrong, and Sam Benedict held the Phillies scoreless.

Rookie 6/7 Baseball

The PNC/National City Bank Mets won 12 to 6 against a very good hitting Bill Estes Chevrolet Diamondbacks team. The Diamondbacks scored 6 runs in the 1st inning, but the Mets defense saved the day shutting out the D-backs the rest of the way. Hitting stars for the Mets were Ryan Cochran with 4 hits, Andrew Redkey with 3 hits and 2 RBI, Ben Swenberg with 2 hits and Harrison Hunn with 2 RBI. Big defensive plays were turned in by Jack Schepferman, Colin Price, Cochran and Redkey. The Mets outfield of Benjamin Hopper, Taylor Kiefer, Ben Hidde, Hunn, Braeden Sanders, and Caleb Cunningham did a nice job of getting the ball back into the infield to hold base runners. Runs were scored by Cochran (3), Redkey (3), Price, Swenberg, Cunningham, Sanders, Hidde, and Hopper.

Majors Softball

The Force defeated the Bandits 12-5. The Force’s ten players scored at least a run and the entire team contributed to a great defensive effort. In the tourney, the Force outscored their opponents 55-20.

Minors Softball

The Carter Van Lines Cyclones beat the Indy Sign Racers 10-7. The Cyclones scored two runs in the first. The Racers jumped out to a 5-2 lead after three innings behind some powerful hitting by Maddie McKay, Lauren Latka, Erin Uebele, Meg Hardesty and Annika Steiner. The Cyclones tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth inning with some strong hitting of their own by Morgan Mateja, Carly Whitlock, Hannah Freeman and Sophie Firmani. The Cyclones scored five runs after hits by Genevieve Harreld, Morgan Mateja, Carly Whitlock, Claire Edwards, Hannah Freeman and Sophie Firmani. Both teams had solid pitching duos with Lauren Latka/Trista Rehmel for the Racers and Carly Whitlock/Morgan Mateja for the Cyclones.

Rookie Softball

The CVS Pharmacy Stars defeated the AA Huber & Sons Firebirds 13 to 7. The Stars got off to a fast start holding the Firebirds scoreless for the first two innings and jumped out to a 6-0 early lead. The Stars then held off a big comeback attempt by the gutty Firebirds to hold onto the win. The Stars played excellent defense and had timely hitting from all eight girls to take the Rookie League Championship.

SHOWCASE Baseball

The Zionsville Showcase10U Green Team, sponsored by the Boone Village Barber Shop, defeated Lebanon 10-1 in five innings. The Eagles pitching was led by Josh Wagner, who earned the win. Wagner pitched three innings, striking out three Tigers and only gave up two hits. The two hits were all Lebanon managed to get in the game. RJ Brow closed the game also striking out three. The Eagles bats were led by Camden Collings 2-2, 3 Runs and stole third; Tyler Thimjon 1-1, 2 R; Andrew Redman 1-2, R, RBI; RJ Brow 1-1, RBI; Kyle Callahan 1-2, RBI and Will Hobick and Connor Wagoner each had two RBIs. The Eagles went 13-2 this year. The Showcase team consists of Tyler Thimjon, Owen Evans, Kody Wagner, Kyle Callahan, RJ Brow, Jacob Pressler, Camden Collings, Andrew Redman, Joshua Wagner, Tyler Milby, Will Hobick, Connor Wagoner, Coaches Kevin Thimjon and Brad Redman and managed by Graig Collings.

The Zionsville Showcase 10U White team lost to Lebanon 9 to 8 on Sunday. Lebanon came from behind in the bottom of the 6th inning to win. Sam Gobeyn, Sam Edgell, and Luke Kidwell pitched for the Eagles. Zack Maluccio, Sam Gobeyn, Clay Gietl, John Gobeyn, Kidwell, Edgell, Jake Muller, and Daniel Walter led the Eagles offense with hits, and Gietl, John Gobeyn, Evan Gilmore, Muller, Jason Holle, and Walter all contributed RBIs. The 10 U White team was coached this season by John Williams.

Zionsville 9U Green Showcase finished the season with a hit – Make that 13 of them. Zionsville hosted Carmel Blue and scored 18 runs on 13 hits. Ben Calisto led the team going 3-4 with 3 RBIs including 2 triples. Ethan Barksdale, Hopper Bumgardner, and Spencer Cochran each went 2-3. All 11 players for Zville crossed home plate scoring a run. Zionsville used 6 different hurlers who only gave up 4 hits and 4 BB on the whole day. Those pitchers were, Barksdale, Bumgardner, Kyle Chrisman, Cochran, Calisto, and Jake Naspinski. This game capped a great 13-3 season for the 9u Green Showcase team. Final Score: Zionsville 18 - Carmel Blue 2.

The Showcase 8U Green team played Noblesville and Avon. In the first game against Noblesville, the team was lead at the plate by Carson Chapman, Gus Hartwig and Christopher Freeman. Orin Edwards had two outstanding catches in the field & Gus Baumgartner had a great game behind the plate. Zach Mullens also had a diving catch in the outfield to rob the opposition of a big play. Noblesville won 12-6. In the final game, the team played Avon. Matthew McKay, Lincoln Horth, Edwards & Hartwig all had multi-hit games. Sam Kidwell provided a big hit for the team in the 5th. Kyle Harmon and Freeman played solid defense for the green team. Avon jumped out with 11 runs in the first two innings. The Eagles held them scoreless after that. The Eagles lost 11-7.
